In response to the brief to re-imagine and re-illustrate the classic children’s tale “The Man Whose Mother was a Pirate”, I created a series of 3 illustrated spreads. These illustrations capture the whimsy and adventure of Margaret Mahy’s story. The transition in rigid compositions from the beginning of the book (top left) to the fluid and dramatic ones at the end (top right) shows both characters embracement of the pirate life. The enviromental details like the archetecture and native fauna tie the story to New Zealand. The bright colours appeal to the target audience of young school aged children.
